We have long dreamed of filling a significant Bay Area Jewish communal need: making a Torah scroll available for use in teaching and in lifecyle rituals that take place outside a Synagogue setting.
Jewish Milestones board member Don Friend has offered a challenge grant to kick off our campaign to raise the $12,000 needed to buy and insure a previously owned, "kosher" sefer Torah (Torah scroll).
Ever since the Middle Ages, Jewish communities have raised funds for the purchase of a Torah scroll by "selling" letters, words and larger portions of the Torah they hoped to acquire. We are encouraging our supporters to consider taking this opportunity to honor family members and friends by "purchasing" parts of a Torah in celebration of a personal milestone or in memory of a loved one.
We welcome the opportunity to work with you by phone or in person to find words, verses, and prtions to suit specific occasions (see samples below)
Entire book (one of five) $2500
Parsha (weekly Torah Portion) $500
Sedra (particular story) $360
Verse (pharse) $180
Word or name $36
The honorees and/or their family will receive a beautiful certificate with the text of the dedication in Hebrew and in English and an acknowledgement of the donor.
Donors and honorees will be recognized at our dedication ceremony for the Torah scroll.
